What is Tier 1 Certification in Fiber Optics?

Tier 1 certification, also known as basic certification, is a crucial process in fiber optic networks. It involves verifying the fundamental performance of fiber optics, including continuity, insertion loss (attenuation), and length. These tests are conducted using a Power Meter and an Optical Light Source.

The objective is to ensure that the fiber meets the signal transmission specifications according to standards such as TIA-568.3 and ISO 11801.

Unlike Tier 2 certification, which involves the use of an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) for an in-depth fiber analysis (detecting splices, faulty connectors, etc.), Tier 1 certification is a critical step to ensure fiber quality without delving into the physical details of the components.

Tier 1 tests measure the essential parameters to guarantee efficient and reliable transmission, especially in data center or telecommunications network environments. These tests include:

Insertion Loss: Measurement of the optical power reduction through a fiber.

Continuity: Verification that the fiber is not cut and can carry a signal.

VIAVI Devices for Tier 1 Certification

To perform effective Tier 1 certification, VIAVI offers devices that meet the performance and precision requirements of optical testing:

• SmartClass Fiber OLTS-85/85P: This Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) measures insertion loss and fiber length, key criteria for Tier 1 certification. It also allows for bidirectional testing in a single connection, reducing testing and installation times.

•  FiberChek Probe: This device complements Tier 1 tests by inspecting and certifying optical connectors. It ensures connectors are clean and functional before installation, preventing signal loss caused by damaged or contaminated connectors.

Report Generation with SmartReporter

Once tests are conducted using VIAVI devices like the SmartClass Fiber OLTS-85, you can use the SmartReporter software to generate professional reports. Here are the steps:

  1. Download the Results: Connect the testing device to SmartReporter via USB or network to retrieve the measurements.
  2. Analyze the Data: The software displays test results (insertion loss, fiber length, etc.) and allows analysis according to certification standards.
  3. Generate the Report: SmartReporter automatically creates customizable reports with graphs and pass/fail results.
  4. Export and Share: Reports can be exported in PDF or Excel format for easy sharing with clients or for archiving purposes.

For a more comprehensive analysis across the entire fiber length and precise event detection (connectors, splices, faults), you can opt for Tier 2 certification using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). This certification ensures a more detailed diagnostic of network performance.
